How do you translate messages on Discord?
As of October 2026, Discord has no built-in message translation. To read one message yourself, copy it into a translator such as Google Translate, or use a bot command that only you see. To translate a whole server, an admin adds a translation bot that posts translations in the channel. Both ways have free options, with limits.
- Only you need to read it
Copy the text into a translator, or use Apps > Translate Text.
- The channel needs one message
A member reacts with a country flag to get a translation.
- Everyone needs every message
An admin adds a bot that translates every new message.
Does Discord have a built-in translator?
No. Discord itself has no translate button in the message menu and no translation setting, on desktop, on the web, or on mobile.
Translation on Discord comes from other tools: a translator app, your browser, or a bot. Discord puts bot commands in a menu called Apps. Some bots translate one message for you. Others translate every new message in a server.
Members have asked for a translate button on Discord's feedback site since 2019. The request has more than 450 votes and no answer from Discord. Discord feedback post, checked 23 October 2026
Which method should you use?
Start with the person who needs the translation. Then choose the simplest method that reaches them.
- Copy and paste: free, no setup. Only you see it. It is slow for many messages.
- Browser translation: free, no setup. Only you see it, and only in a web browser.
- Translate Text: free, inside Discord, also in DMs. Only you see it. Up to 200 times per day.
- Flag reactions: one message at a time, for the channel or by DM. Each one uses one of the server's monthly translations.
- Automatic translation: every new message, for everyone. An admin sets it up one time. Free for 100 translations per month.
- Voice chat translation: live calls, as text in the voice channel chat. Ultra and Founder Access.
- Client mod plugins: free, but they break Discord's terms.
How do you translate one message for yourself?
Copy and paste works everywhere. On a phone, press and hold the message and select Copy Text. Paste the text into a translator app such as Google Translate or DeepL. This needs no setup, but it is slow when you need more than a few messages.
In a web browser, the browser's page translation or a translation extension can translate the messages on your screen. Only you see the result, and it works only in that browser.
Translate Text keeps you in Discord. In a server that has BabelBot, right-click a message, or press and hold it on a phone, and select Apps > Translate Text. Only you see the translation. To use it in DMs and in other servers, install BabelBot for your Discord account.
Translate Text uses your Discord language. To read in a different language, run /set-context-language. It is free and does not use the server's monthly translations. Each person can use it 200 times per day.
How do you translate one message for the channel?
Use flag reactions. In a server with BabelBot, a member reacts to a message with a country flag. BabelBot translates the message into that country's language. This also works on older messages.
Flag reactions are on when you add BabelBot. An admin can turn them off in the dashboard. The admin also chooses who sees the result: everyone in the channel, or only the member who reacted, by DM. Each flag translation uses one of the server's monthly translations.
How do you translate every message in a server?
Add a translation bot. With BabelBot, automatic translation is a server setting. An admin chooses target languages in the dashboard, and every member sees the translations. Members write normally and do not run commands. Guided setup takes about 2 minutes.
Each target language adds one translation under a message. With 3 target languages, one message can get 3 translations. BabelBot posts nothing for a language that the message is already in. Start with one or two languages. Channel rules can turn translation off or change the languages for one channel.
The admin also chooses where translations appear. Reply mode posts the translation under the message. Thread mode keeps translations in a thread, out of the main channel. Replace the original deletes the message and posts the translation with the member's name and avatar. If your server has separate language channels, a bridge copies each message into the other channels in their languages.
BabelBot sends message text to an AI provider to translate it, and it can use nearby messages for context. Slang and game terms can still be wrong. Add custom words to keep names and game terms as you write them.
One message counts as one translation, even with several target languages. Free gives a server 100 translations per month and 3 target languages. When they run out, translations pause until the 1st of the next month, and any member can vote for BabelBot on top.gg to get all 100 back. Pro costs €9.99 per month for 10,000 translations. Ultra costs €19.99 per month for 50,000. Founder Access costs €199 one time for unlimited translations.
Other translation bots work differently. Some translate only for members who opt in, or set limits for each member. Compare them before you choose.
Can you translate Discord voice chat?
Yes, as text. An admin turns on voice chat translation in the dashboard. A member joins a voice channel and runs /voice start in a text channel. BabelBot writes down what people say and posts translations in that voice channel's chat. It does not speak. /voice stop ends the session.
Voice chat translation is on Ultra and Founder Access. Voice messages that members post in chat are different: media translation on Pro and higher plans translates them.
Can you use a client mod translation plugin?
Client mods such as BetterDiscord and Vencord change the Discord app on your computer. Both have translation plugins that translate messages in your own app.
Discord's terms do not allow software that changes its app, and Discord can suspend accounts that break its terms. The Vencord project says it knows of no user banned for using a client mod, so the risk is low but real. To stay inside the rules, use Translate Text for a private translation.

Common questions
Can Discord translate messages automatically?
Not by itself. A server admin can add a translation bot, such as BabelBot, to translate new messages automatically.
Is there a free way to translate on Discord?
Yes. Copy and paste into a translator app is free. BabelBot's Translate Text is free, up to 200 times per day for each person. The BabelBot Free plan gives a server 100 automatic and flag translations per month. When they run out, a top.gg vote by any member gets all 100 back.
Does changing Discord's language translate messages?
No. User Settings > Language changes Discord's menus and buttons. Messages stay in the language that people write them in.
Can I translate a Discord DM?
Yes. Install BabelBot for your Discord account. Then use Apps > Translate Text on the message. Only you see the result. Automatic translation does not run in DMs.
Does translation work in the Discord mobile app?
Yes. Press and hold a message, then select Apps > Translate Text. Flag reactions and automatic translations also show in the iPhone and Android apps.
Can I translate older messages?
Automatic translation works on new messages only. To translate an older message for yourself, use Translate Text. To show the translation to the channel, react with a country flag.
