Translate a message for yourself
Use Translate Text and Detect Language in servers or direct messages.
You can ask BabelBot to translate one message without changing a server's settings. Translate Text shows a translation only you can see. Detect Language tells you which language the message uses.
You do not need Manage Server for these actions.
Add BabelBot to your account
Install BabelBot for your Discord account and complete Discord's prompts.
An account installation lets you use the actions in direct messages, private channels, and servers where BabelBot is not installed. It does not enable automatic translation for a whole server.
Choose the language you want to read
Run /set-context-language and choose a language. This is your personal default for Translate Text. It does not change the server's target languages or other members' choices.
If you have not selected one, BabelBot uses your Discord language setting when it can. Run the command again to change your choice. BabelBot keeps the saved choice for 180 days after you set it or use Translate Text.
Translate a message
- Right-click the message in Discord.
- Open Apps, then select Translate Text.
- Read the private result in Discord.
This uses AI. In a server, it counts toward that server's AI usage. It keeps the original message and does not turn automatic translation on.
Identify a language
Right-click a message, open Apps, and select Detect Language. BabelBot shows the detected language in a result only you can see.
If the message is too short or unclear to identify confidently, the result can be Unknown. Try a longer sentence from the same conversation.
If the actions are missing
Check that you completed the account installation, then reopen the message menu. For server-wide translations, an admin must install BabelBot for the server and follow Quick start.
For a public translation or a direct message in a server that allows it, see Flag reactions.
Remove the account installation
In Discord, open User Settings, then Authorized Apps. Find BabelBot and select Deauthorize. You can install it for your account again later.
This removes its access to your account. Server installations are separate. See Discord's app access guide for removal details.
