Media translation

Translate supported PDFs, images, videos, and audio attachments posted in Discord.

Media translation helps members read or understand supported files posted in text channels. This includes PDFs, images, video attachments, and audio clips such as voice notes.

For example, a member posts a screenshot with French text. BabelBot posts a translation that members can read in the target language. The result appears as a Discord message. BabelBot does not edit the original file in place.

Turn it on

Your server needs Pro, Ultra, or Founder Access and available AI translations. You also need Manage Server in Discord to change the setting.

  1. Sign in to the dashboard and select your server.
  2. Open Media translation.
  3. Turn Media translation on.
  4. Confirm your target languages and the channel's automatic translation settings.

Try a supported attachment

If English is your target, post an image that contains Bonjour, comment allez-vous ? in an enabled channel. For other targets, use clear text in a different language. Check the translation beside the original or in its translation thread. If you add a text caption, BabelBot translates it with the media result.

BabelBot handles several supported images in the order they appear. It supports PDFs up to 50 MB. Unsupported file types are not sent for media translation. If media cannot translate, normal automatic messages can still get a text translation with a short notice about the missing media result.

Audio clips and live calls have different settings

Media translation covers audio files posted as messages. To translate people speaking in a live Discord call, use Voice chat translation, available on Ultra and Founder Access.

Other ways to translate media

Members can use a flag reaction on supported attachments when the server allows it. This also needs media translation and AI allowance.

Bridges can copy attachments even when media translation is off. Copying a file between channels is different from translating its contents. Copying alone does not use AI allowance.

Turn it off or limit it to channels

Turn Media translation off to stop automatic media translation at the server default. Use Channel rules for channels that need a different setting. Check those rules if a channel still translates media after changing the default.

If supported media does not translate, check the plan, remaining AI allowance, channel rules, and bot permissions. See Troubleshooting for further checks.

Custom words

Tell BabelBot how to translate names, game terms, and community vocabulary.

Voice chat translation

Translate live Discord voice calls into readable text in your voice channel chat.
