Bridges
Link language channels so members can follow the same conversation.
A bridge copies messages between channels and translates them into each channel's assigned language. Members can chat in the channel for their language without missing messages from the other channels.
For example, link #english with #french. A message in #english appears in French in #french. A reply in #french appears in English in #english.
Create a bridge
- Sign in to the dashboard and select your server. You need Manage Server in Discord.
- On Overview, make sure Translations is on.
- Open Bridges and select Add bridge.
- Choose two channels and a language for each.
- To link more channels, select Add channel and choose each additional channel's language.
- Select Add bridge.
Two channels make a pair bridge. Adding more channels makes a hub bridge. For a hub, choose a different language for every channel.
The first channel in a hub is the main channel. The additional linked channels are called spokes. Messages from the main channel go to its spokes. Messages from a spoke go to the main channel and the other spokes.
Each pair counts as one bridge toward your plan limit. Each hub spoke also counts as one. A hub can have up to 25 spokes. The dashboard shows your available capacity. See Billing and limits.
A channel can belong to only one bridge or cross-server connection. Remove its existing connection before using it elsewhere.
Test both directions
Post a sentence in the language assigned to the first channel. Check for its translated copy in the second channel. Reply from the second channel and check the first.
BabelBot treats a message's source language as the language assigned to that channel. Tell members which language to use in each channel. Skip languages does not apply to bridges.
In each linked channel, BabelBot needs View Channel, Send Messages, and Manage Webhooks. It creates the posting connections automatically when it first copies a message.
If a copy is missing, check those permissions and any warning on Overview. Saving a bridge does not grant Discord permissions.
What crosses the bridge?
BabelBot carries replies with a preview and a link to the matching message. Editing text updates linked copies and can use translation allowance again. Deleting an original removes its linked copies while BabelBot can still match the original to its copies. Deleting just a copy leaves the original and other copies in place.
Images, supported videos, and custom server stickers can cross a bridge even with Media translation off. Other files appear as links. Spoilered images and supported videos stay hidden until opened. Copying an attachment without translating it does not use AI allowance.
Reactions also appear on linked copies while BabelBot can still match the original to its copies. Discord shows BabelBot as the account adding those copied reactions.
Stop a bridge
Remove the bridge on Bridges to stop future messages crossing between those channels. You can pause all bridges with Translations on Overview and turn it back on later.
Channel rules do not stop bridges
Selecting Translation status and turning Disable translation on stops normal automatic translation in those channels. A configured bridge keeps copying messages until you remove it or turn off the server's Translations switch.
Deleting a linked Discord channel removes the affected pair or hub spoke. Deleting the main hub channel, or its only remaining spoke, removes the hub.
For channels in different servers, use Cross-server connections.
