Custom words
Tell BabelBot how to translate names, game terms, and community vocabulary.
Custom words are a list of words or phrases with the translations you want BabelBot to use. You may also hear this called a glossary.
Use a custom word for a game term, server name, or product name that keeps translating the wrong way. To keep a name unchanged, enter the same name as its translation.
Add a word
- Sign in to the dashboard and select your server. You need Manage Server in Discord.
- Open Custom words and add a word.
- Enter the word or phrase that appears in messages.
- Choose the language you are translating into, or All Languages. This is the target language, not the original message's language.
- Enter the wording you want under Translate it as, then select Save word.
For example, enter Moonbase as both the word and its translation, with All Languages selected. BabelBot keeps that name when translating into any target language.
For a French translation of Moonbase, choose French and enter base lunaire under Translate it as. That rule changes French translations while leaving other languages to translate the term as usual.
The optional note is a reminder for your team. BabelBot does not use it as an instruction.
How matching works
BabelBot matches whole words and phrases, ignoring capitalization. A rule for cat matches Cat, but not catalog. The result keeps the spelling and capitalization you entered under Translate it as. Code and web addresses stay unchanged.
Custom words apply to AI translation, including automatic messages, bridges, flag reactions, Translate Text, and voice chat translation. They can also apply to media captions and speech transcribed from audio attachments.
Custom words need AI allowance
A message that contains a custom word uses AI. It cannot fall back to BabelBot's in-house text translator when your AI allowance runs out.
Free servers can add 5 custom words, Pro can add 25, and Ultra and Founder Access can add 100. See Billing and limits for plan details.
Test, change, or remove a word
Send a full sentence containing the word, in a language that will translate. Check the result in the language you selected for the rule.
If it does not match, check the original phrase and the rule's language. Edit the entry to change the result, or delete it to let BabelBot translate that term without your rule.
