Automatic translation

Translate new Discord messages without asking members to use a command.

BabelBot reads new messages in enabled channels, detects their language, and posts translations into the languages you choose. Members can keep chatting in their own language.

For example, choose English as a target language. When someone writes Bonjour, comment allez-vous ?, BabelBot posts an English translation. A message already in English usually needs no translation.

Set it up

You need Manage Server in Discord and BabelBot installed in your server. If you have not added it yet, follow Quick start.

  1. Sign in to the dashboard and select your server.
  2. On Overview, turn Translations on.
  3. Open Target languages and add the languages your members want to read.
  4. Open Automatic translation. Turn on the channel types you want to translate.
  5. Open Reply mode and choose where translations appear.

These choices save automatically. Wait for Saved before testing.

The channel types are Text channels, Voice channel chats, and Forum and media posts. Voice channel chats are the written messages beside a voice call. To translate speech, use Voice chat translation.

These choices also apply to new channels. A channel rule can override the default for selected channels.

Check your first translation

If English is your only target language, send Bonjour, comment allez-vous ? in an enabled text channel. Otherwise, use a full sentence in a language outside your target languages. Check the reply or translation thread in Discord. Short messages such as OK, numbers, and messages that contain only a link may not need translation.

If nothing appears, check that BabelBot can view and send messages in the channel. Then check Channel rules, Skip languages, and Ignored users. Troubleshooting explains other causes.

AI allowance and text translation

An AI allowance is the number of AI translations your plan includes. After it runs out, supported plain text can still use BabelBot's in-house translator. Languages marked AI only, custom words, and media need AI allowance. See Billing and limits.

Pause translation

Turn off a channel type in Automatic translation to pause normal automatic translation there. Bridges and flag reactions have their own settings.

To pause automatic translation and bridges across the server, turn Translations off on Overview. Turn it back on to use your saved settings again.
