Channel rules
Give selected Discord channels different translation settings.
Channel rules let you change translation behavior in selected channels while keeping the server defaults elsewhere.
For example, you can translate the general chat into English and Spanish, translate a help channel into French, and leave a moderation channel untranslated.
Create a rule
- Sign in to the dashboard and select your server. You need Manage Server in Discord.
- Open Channel rules and select Add channel rule.
- Select the channels it should apply to.
- Select the checkbox beside each setting you want to override, then choose its value.
- Select Create rule.
- Use Preview a channel to check the settings BabelBot will use.
You can change translation status, target languages, Don't translate from, reply mode, reply style, flag reactions, and media translation where your plan allows it. Settings you leave at the server default follow the server's choices.
Rule order matters
The first matching rule wins. If a channel appears in several rules, BabelBot uses the first one. It does not combine all matching rules. Drag rules to change their order.
For example, put a rule for a French help channel above a broader rule that includes the same channel. Use the preview to confirm which rule takes effect.
Stop automatic translation in a channel
Create a rule for that channel. Select the Translation status checkbox, then turn Disable translation on. Select Create rule.
To allow translation requests, also select Flag reactions and turn Enable flag reactions on.
Bridges have their own routes
A channel rule that stops automatic translation does not stop a configured bridge. Remove the bridge or disconnect the cross-server connection to stop messages crossing between those channels.
A rule can override the channel-type defaults under Automatic translation. It cannot turn automatic translation back on while the server's Translations switch is off.
Test and remove a rule
Post a sentence in the selected channel. Confirm its languages and delivery match the preview. Then test a channel outside the rule to check that it still uses the defaults.
Edit the rule to change its choices, or remove it to let the next matching rule or server defaults apply. Check Preview a channel again after changing the order or removing a rule.
