Flag reactions

Ask for a translation by adding a country flag reaction to a message.

A flag reaction lets a member translate one message without changing the server's target languages. The member adds a supported country flag reaction, and BabelBot translates into the language associated with that flag.

For example, a French flag asks for a French translation. Not every flag has a supported language, and a flag does not let you choose between all languages spoken in that country.

Enable flag reactions

  1. Sign in to the dashboard and select your server. You need Manage Server in Discord.
  2. Open Flag reactions.
  3. Turn flag reactions on.
  4. Set Translation visibility to Public or Private DM.
  5. Wait for Saved before testing.

With Public, BabelBot posts the result in the channel using its reply or thread settings. With Private DM, BabelBot sends the result only to the member who added the reaction.

A private translation does not hide the reaction

The original message and the member's flag reaction remain visible in the channel. If Discord blocks the direct message, BabelBot does not post the translation publicly.

Try it as a member

  1. Find a message written in another language.
  2. Use Discord's Add Reaction control and choose a supported country flag, such as the French flag.
  3. Read the translation in the channel or your direct messages, depending on the server's setting.

You do not need Manage Server to react. Flag translations use AI and need available AI translations from the server's plan. Paid servers with media translation enabled can also translate supported attachments this way.

Control where members can use it

Use Channel rules to allow or block flag reactions in selected channels. You can turn automatic translation off in a rule and leave flag reactions on for requests.

Flag requests ignore Skip languages because the member asked for a translation. Turning automatic translation off in a channel rule does not block flag requests. To block requests there, override Flag reactions and turn Enable flag reactions off. In Replace the original mode, a public flag translation uses a reply and keeps the original.

If nothing appears

Check the flag setting, matching channel rule, server's Translations switch, and AI allowance. For private delivery, make sure the requester allows direct messages from server members in Discord.

Turn flag reactions off on the same page to stop requests, or use a channel rule to block them in one channel.

For a translation visible only to you in Discord, you can also use Translate Text.

Cross-server connections

Connect one channel in each of two Discord servers.

Custom words
