About BabelBot

Built because literal Discord translation was not good enough

I'm Bram Suurd, a developer in the Netherlands. The Discord translation bots I tried translated the words and lost the meaning. So I built my own.

The problem

Correct words, wrong message

Chat in a multilingual server is short, casual, and full of context. Most bots translate each message alone, word for word. They miss the polite no, the sarcasm, the idiom, and the slang.

The translation looks correct, but people read the wrong message. After a few of those, members stop trusting the bot and the server splits into language groups again.

Reply to Sam: Can we move the raid to tonight?

YukiJA

ちょっと難しいかもしれません。

Word-for-word

That may be a little difficult.

BabelBot

Sorry, I can't make it tonight.

Reply to Sam: Should we let Jake call the shots again?

MateoES

Sí, claro, porque la última vez salió de maravilla.

Word-for-word

Yes, clear, because the last time it came out of marvel.

BabelBot

Oh sure, because that went so well last time.

What I built instead

A bot that translates what people mean

  1. It reads the conversation

BabelBot can include recent messages from the same channel. It knows what a reply answers, so a short answer keeps its meaning.

  2. It uses your server's words

Custom words keep names, game terms, and community slang the way your members use them.

  3. It stays in the chat

Translations appear as replies, in threads, in linked language channels, or in place of the original under the member's name. Members keep chatting in one place.

  4. It keeps working

When the monthly AI allowance runs out, BabelBot's own translator keeps supported text translating. The free plan has no vote wall.

How I run it

Plain rules, written down

  • No message text in storage

Bridge and replacement records keep Discord IDs and delivery state. They do not store message text.

    Read the privacy policy
  • AI translation in the EU

AI text translation runs on Google model servers in the EU.

    See the subprocessors
  • Prices you can read

Plans are per server. The free plan costs EUR 0 per month.

Talk to me

BabelBot is a small, independent product. When you report a problem, I read it myself.

Add BabelBot to your server and send a test message. If a translation misses the point, tell me.
